2024 Tagliatela College of Engineering Student Awards

The Tagliatela College of Engineering had its yearly award ceremony on Thursday, April 11, 2024, to honor our students’ outstanding accomplishments. The occasion was a huge success, exhibiting our recipients’ inventive spirit and superior academic standing. A variety of prizes were given out during the ceremony to students who had excelled academically and significantly advanced the engineering community. The strong standards and ideals of our college were reflected in the categories of innovation, leadership, service, and research excellence.

Faculty, staff, students, and prominent members of the engineering community turned out in large numbers to honor the recipients’ successes. Detailed information about the awardees and their achievements is available on this page.

Academic Excellence Awards

Mechanical Engineering (BSME) – Anna Ort

Anna is a senior mechanical engineering student who loves to be involved on campus. During her first year on campus, she helped revive the ASME student section and, as a senior, served as the Vice President. She worked as a Peer Assistant in the engineering department for 2 years, and in her last year at the university, she worked at the Makerspace. She interned at RBC Bearings the summer after her junior year and will be working there full-time after graduation. This past year, she has been updating the air revitalization section of a NASA training primer as a research project. In Anna’s free time, she loves to do art, including drawing, painting, and crocheting.

Mechanical Engineering (MSME) – Sundar Dangol

Sundar is an MSME student at the University of New Haven, hailing from Nepal, and is set to graduate in Spring 2024. Beyond maintaining an impressive GPA, Sundar has been awarded the TCOE Endowed Graduate Fellowship. His research is centered on the area of 3D-printed polymeric materials for electronic applications. Currently, Sundar is in the process of preparing a manuscript for publication. We take great pride in celebrating Sundar’s accomplishments.

Industrial Engineering (MSIE) – Mohammed Abdul Rahman

Abdul Rahman Mohammed enrolled in the Industrial Engineering program at the University of New Haven in the Fall of 2023. Throughout his time at UNH, Abdul Rahman has consistently demonstrated exceptional academic performance and a strong work ethic, as evidenced by his high grades and active participation in class.

Recently, Abdul Rahman successfully secured an internship at TRUMPF Inc. This internship is focused on Supply Chain Management, with a particular emphasis on utilizing the Python programming language. This emphasis aligns perfectly with the courses offered at UNH in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Operations Management (EOM) programs.

During the interview process for the internship, Abdul Rahman impressed the interviewer by showcasing his Supply Chain project and his proficiency in Data Analytics using Python. These demonstrations were received very positively, reflecting Abdul Rahman’s dedication in the field.

Engineering and Operations Management (MSEOM) – Asa deBlois

Asa deBlois is a standout student in the Engineering and Operations Management program at the University of New Haven. Throughout his time at UNH, Asa has demonstrated exceptional academic abilities and work ethic. Asa shines not only in his academic pursuits but also in his role at Medtronic, a leading medical device company, where he’s been a Principal Analyst for 8 years. As a Principal Analyst, Asa’s expertise in data-driven decision-making and strategic planning has significantly contributed to Medtronic’s success, particularly in areas such as digital technologies and robotics. With his background in Mechanical Engineering, Asa exemplifies the practical implications of engineering management in today’s professional landscape, making him a true role model for academic excellence and real-world impact.

Outstanding Service Awards

Engineering and Operations Management (MSEOM) – Kiran Jakkli Sounder Karthi

Kiran joined the University of New Haven in Spring 2023, and since his arrival, he has consistently exhibited exceptional dedication and an exemplary work ethic. Kiran’s contributions to the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department as a Teaching Assistant during Fall 2023 underscore his unwavering commitment to academic excellence and mentorship. Moreover, Kiran’s involvement as a co-organizer of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering showcase in Fall 2023 highlights his proactive leadership skills. As the social media director of the IISE Students chapter, Kiran actively engages the university community. His tireless efforts, coupled with his determination to surpass expectations, make Kiran a truly invaluable member of our institution

Mechanical Engineering (BSME) – Nicholas Babich

As a graduating senior, Nick stands out not only for his academic excellence but also for his remarkable contributions to the department. As the leader of the Astronomy Club for four years and an active member of our ASME student chapter, he has played a key role in bringing students together and creating a lively community. Nick has also been crucial in getting our new injection molding machine and SLA 3D printer up and running. These tools have greatly improved our hands-on classes, with Nick always ready to help students learn how to use them. He’s also actively pursuing research with Dr. Emon, having presented his work at national conferences and received accolades from both the NSF and our Department.

Mechanical Engineering (MSME) – Justin Duprey

Justin Duprey received his Bachelor’s degree of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UNH in 2023. Now in graduate school, he is working for the Makerspace as Head TA helping to facilitate the facility and assisting students with their projects using the space’s equipment. Justin Duprey has been a Manufacturing and Quality Engineering Intern at Beta Shim Co., a small Manufacturing Company, since June 2021. His hobbies include 3D Modeling, 3D printing, running, weight training, hiking, and snowboarding.
